Sentilla Debuts Energy Management Platform for Data Centers

Sentilla’s Technology Empowers Businesses to Slash Energy Costs and Carbon Footprint through Energy Tracking at the Server Level

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., January 27, 2009—Sentilla Corporation, provider of demand-side energy management solutions for data centers and commercial facilities, today introduced Sentilla Energy Manager™ to provide detailed analysis of the power profile of a data center, enabling managers and IT staff to better measure and manage power consumption, increase energy efficiency and lower operating costs to improve business performance. Sentilla debuts the energy measurement and management software platform on the heels of a $7.5 million Series B financing round.

“As energy resources become more scarce and IT and operating budgets get leaner, companies are looking at ways to do more with less,” said Bob Davis, chief executive officer of Sentilla. “Sentilla offers businesses the power to evaluate and subsequently transform energy-draining data centers into more efficient and less costly operations. Already deployed in commercial and industrial facilities, Sentilla’s technology wirelessly analyzes the energy profile of each piece of equipment so that managers have the knowledge they need to reduce consumption.”

The core of Sentilla's technology is a series of tiny microprocessors embedded in intelligent power strips that easily integrate into any existing data center, measuring energy consumption at the server level to generate an actionable profile of use in a single snapshot that can be remotely managed. With the resulting insight into real-world conditions directly at the source of power activity, change or consumption, Sentilla’s platform enables users to take control of their energy use and carbon footprint.

Sentilla's distinctiveness lies in the measurement at the source -- where and by what equipment energy is being used. Sentilla Energy Manager wirelessly transmits data from each server back into the remote management system and alerts the user to where and when the load is peaking. Companies save money by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions by tracking power utilization at the equipment level. As power and cooling comprise up to 40 percent of a data center’s costs, the savings achievable by a reduction in energy consumption can be in the millions.

“Sun is a big proponent of leveraging new, innovative technologies to help us reduce our carbon footprint and continue our drive toward sustainability,” said Subodh Bapat, vice president and distinguished engineer, Eco Responsibility Office, Sun Microsystems. “Sentilla's solution hones in on the central issues of energy efficiency and sustainability -- our demand for efficient, intelligent use of available energy. The Sentilla Energy Manager provides companies the ability to reduce their energy usage and their carbon footprint, resulting in a more robust bottom line.”

Chris Ingle, consulting and research director at IDC added: “IDC's research shows that 57% of organizations consider the electricity consumption of their data centers to be key to their sustainable IT strategy. However it has been difficult to measure this consumption accurately and manual approaches tend to be relatively costly. Technologies that automate this measurement allow companies to properly implement their vision for sustainable IT.”
